1. What is Voyager 1? An Endless Voyage Launched in 1977

Launched by NASA on September 5, 1977, the robotic space probe Voyager 1 took advantage of a rare planetary alignment that occurs only once every 175 years. Utilizing gravity assists (slingshot maneuvers), it conducted spectacular historic flybys of Jupiter (1979) and Saturn (1980).

After discovering active volcanism on Jupiter's moon Io and revealing the dense nitrogen atmosphere of Saturn's moon Titan, Voyager 1 angled sharply northward out of the ecliptic plane, embarking on a solitary journey into the uncharted cosmos beyond our Solar System.

2. Current Location: What is "Interstellar Space" 24 Billion Kilometers Away?

In August 2012, Voyager 1 made history by crossing the heliopause—the outer boundary where the hot solar wind from our Sun is pushed back by the interstellar medium—becoming the first human-made object to enter interstellar space.

Today, Voyager 1 is flying through the interstellar medium at an astonishing speed of roughly 17 km/s (over 61,000 km/h) at a distance of more than 24 billion kilometers (approx. 163 Astronomical Units, AU) from Earth. It remains the most distant human-made object in history, extending that record with every passing second.

In the frigid depths of deep space where sunlight is virtually undetectable, conventional solar panels are useless. Voyager 1 relies on Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generators (RTGs), which convert the decay heat of Plutonium-238 into electricity using thermocouples.

Although its electrical output diminishes each year by about 4 watts, NASA engineers at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) have carefully managed power by shutting down non-essential heaters and instruments, keeping essential engineering telemetry and interstellar plasma sensors alive.

4. Communicating with Earth: Deep Space Network (DSN) with 22-Hour Latency

Voyager 1's high-gain radio transmitter operates at just about 20 watts—comparable to a small refrigerator lightbulb. Detecting this unfathomably faint signal across billions of kilometers requires NASA's global Deep Space Network (DSN) antenna facilities in Goldstone (California), Madrid (Spain), and Canberra (Australia).

Equipped with colossal 70-meter parabolic dishes and cryogenic low-noise receivers, the DSN continues to decode interstellar magnetic field measurements and cosmic ray densities transmitted from the spacecraft.

5. Humanity's Message on the Golden Record

Mounted on the side of Voyager 1 is the iconic gold-plated copper Golden Record. Curated by an astronomer committee chaired by Carl Sagan, it contains sounds of Earth (wind, rain, animal calls), greetings in 55 human languages, classical and world folk music, and 115 analog photographs depicting human civilization.

Long after its nuclear batteries go cold and radio transmissions fall silent, Voyager 1 will silently wander through the Milky Way for hundreds of millions of years—a permanent cosmic time capsule and message from Earth to potential extraterrestrial civilizations.
