On October 4, 1957, launched atop a modified R-7 Semyorka intercontinental ballistic missile from the Baikonur Cosmodrome, Sputnik 1 became the first artificial Earth satellite in human history.
Its distinctive radio transmitter broadcastsโa rhythmic "beep... beep... beep..." at 20.005 and 40.002 MHzโwere picked up by amateur radio operators, observatories, and military monitoring stations worldwide, dramatically inaugurating the modern Space Age.

Traveling at roughly 7.9 km/s (approx. 28,400 km/h), it maintained an elliptical orbit with a perigee of 215 km and an apogee of 939 km at an inclination of 65.1 degrees, completing one full revolution around the globe every 96.2 minutes.
While Sputnik's transmitters ceased after three weeks, the satellite continued to circle Earth as a silent metallic pioneer. Atmospheric drag slowly degraded its orbit over the course of 92 days.
On January 4, 1958, after completing 1,440 orbits and traveling approximately 70 million kilometers, Sputnik 1 burned up harmlessly upon reentering the denser layers of Earth's atmosphere. The orbital decay rate provided humanity with its first accurate measurements of upper atmospheric density.
